In a small, supportive setting, our students benefit from specific academic skills, such as note taking, studying, test taking, research, academic writing and oral and multi-media presentations. Both instruction and assessment will be individualized based on education, goals and personal learning styles. Durham Academy operates on two terms. All three of our schools boast excellent customer service and communication between teachers and parents on an ongoing basis. Our academic team consists of Ontario Certified Teachers and specialists in their subjects who are dedicated to supporting students and maintaining the highest standard of academic excellence. In addition to classroom work, learning will be enriched through:
- Workshops
- Field trips to cultural institutions
- Introduction to swimming, skating and racquet sports
- Connections with post-secondary institutions
We encourage each student to visit our school for a day, meet the principal and join their current grade to participate in a typical day. The school year has begun but interviews or tours for any prospective students or interested applicants and families are available year-round. Prospective families should contact durhamacademyss@yahoo.com or call +1 905-240-2501 to arrange a personal meeting and tour. Admissions are offered throughout the year. Choosing a school is a very important decision. It is important for us to get to know each applicant and their family, and to offer you an opportunity to tour the school, visit the classrooms, and discuss your educational goals for your child. At the beginning of your tour, you will meet the principal who will discuss the schools philosophy, its day to day schedule and your child’s specific needs. The principal will take you on a tour of the school, introduce you to our faculty and answer any questions that you may have.
Community Involvement
Community involvement activities are an important part of the school’s program. Students must complete a minimum of 40 hours of community service as part of the requirements for the Ontario Secondary School Diploma. The aim is to encourage students to develop an awareness of the role they can play in supporting their communities. Students are encouraged to complete the 40 hours of community involvement as early as possible ideally before the end of grade 10. Our local partnerships provide opportunities for students to earn their community service hours as well as gaining valuable experiences and networking.
High School co-curricular Programs
A strong Co-curricular program exposes students to a wide variety of experiences. At Durham Academy in addition to field trips and guest speakers we also offer an extensive array of co-curricular activities. Special events to expect are: Exhibits, Lunch Time Intramurals, Community Service, Science Fair, Public Speaking and Applied Science Work Shops.
