Durham Academy Secondary School International Admissions
- In 2017 Durham Academy Secondary School welcomes its first high school class with students from Canada and around the globe. Be a part of this exciting endeavor and educate your child in one of the most highly-ranked countries in the world for education, quality of life and diversity.
- The Academy is located in Oshawa, Ontario, a city of 150,000. Oshawa is small and safe city–with an affordable cost of living–yet is within a 30-minute drive of Toronto and 2 hours from Niagara Falls. The Academy is in a quiet residential area within walking distance of public transportation, and with facilities that are ideal for a school that focuses on small class sizes and knowing each student’s name.
- While the Academy is new, its educational foundation started over thirty years ago with Great Beginnings Montessori and Durham Elementary Private School. Their philosophy of education ensures that each student will be recognized as an individual with unique talents and abilities. Durham is a member of the Ontario Federation of Independent Schools.
- The curriculum chosen by the Academy will focus on Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) and students will work towards the Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD). Fully accredited by the Ontario Ministry of Education, the Academy hires Ontario Certified Teachers who also have training in English as a Second Language. Inside and outside of the classroom, your child will participate in activities and events that will help them acclimate to the Canadian culture and enhance their educational studies.
- In order for your child to feel at home, even when they are away from home, the Academy has arranged for homestays with local families. In this supportive atmosphere your child will receive nutritious meals, have their own bedroom, and transportation to and from school. The homestay parent can also act, if needed, as your child’s custodian (as required by Canadian immigration regulations). Your child may also stay with their homestay family during the holidays and school breaks.
- Airport pick-up, and an orientation to the school and the Oshawa area will be provided during the week before classes begin (no additional charge). Parents or guardians are most welcome to attend.
Application Process
Upon receipt a completed International Student Admissions Package:
- Your application will be reviewed by the International Admissions Counselor and then referred to the Principal;
- You will be contacted to arrange for an interview via Skype. If possible, both parents (or guardian) should be available for the interview, along with the applicant;
- Admissions decisions will be made within 10 days of your interview. You will receive your decision via an emailed Durham Academy Letter of Admission from the International Admissions Counselor or your Educational Consultant.
- To accept your offer of admission an Administrative Fee of $300 and a deposit of $5000 must be returned within three weeks of the date on the Letter of Admission. The $5000 deposit will be applied towards the first year of tuition, or refunded if a study permit is not approved. A tuition payment plan is available.
- Upon receipt of the deposit, you will be provided with a Student Admission Form that will list all of the information, including housing arrangements, that is required for the study permit application.
- You may use the Student Admission Form, along with the Letter of Admission, to apply for your study permit with the closest Canadian consulate. Our International Admissions Counselor can also assist you with the study permit application for an additional fee of $475.
